Backstory: When Samian was a child, he lived in a town mostly walled by mountains. In one of the caves in the mountain most easily accessible to the townsfolk, there lived an old mage whom the townsfolk had dubbed “Ferdinand”. Nobody knew how he had gotten the name or what his real name was. Young Samian and his best friend, Destri, were fascinated by the grumpy old man who rarely came down from his mountain home. When Destri’s family moved far away, Samian had nobody to play or talk with, so he figured he had nothing to lose by engaging in conversation with the old mage. When he approached him, the old man told him in no uncertain terms to “fuck off”, but Samian was persistent. Eventually he followed Ferdinand around so much that the old sorcerer gave him a “quest’. Ferdinand knew that no normal child could complete it, but what he didn’t know was that Samian had an unusually high (but not unheard of) level of mana. The quest was specifically to get a sword at the bottom of a lake. People sometimes talked about it, but nobody was sure it even existed. Another thing that Ferdinand didn’t know was that Samian was absolutely determined to become his apprentice. A couple weeks later, near midnight, Ferdinand heard a knock at the door to his cave. He was a bit peeved, because he had just finished writing the incantation for a new spell and wanted to go to bed, but nevertheless he opened the door. He got the surprise of his life when he saw the child standing in his doorway, soaking wet and grinning with the sheathed sword slung over his shoulder. Ferdinand was grumpy, but he wasn’t heartless, so he let Samian stay the night at his place. In the morning, Samian asked Ferdinand if he could become his apprentice yet. Ferdinanad obviously didn’t want an apprentice, so he whipped up a story on the spot about how that was just the first quest of many required to become a mage’s apprentice. So he promptly sent Samian on another seemingly impossible but not dangerous quest. That eventually turned out the same as the first one. So he sent the boy on another one, and another and another. The quests gradually became more dangerous, and Ferdinand figured the child’s parents would stop him, but they never did. So he kept sending Samian on quests, which the boy kept completing. So in a sneaky way, Samian did get what he wanted. Slowly, Samian started staying at Ferdinand’s cave more often, which eventually just became the norm. By the time Samian was 17, he would stay at Ferdinand’s cave most weeknights and spend weekends in the town. He would also sometimes go on longer quests to places as far as the Central-Southern Highlands. He sometimes came back with friends he had met on his adventures and convince Ferdinand to let them stay the night. Samian eventually built up a reputation as a freelance adventurer, or bounty hunter, as some liked to call him. He also loved experimenting with potions, and making new ones in unorthodox ways. His most famous one was a wall-walking potion, which he continues to experiment with to try and make an anti-gravity potion. Currently though, he is adventuring with his friends and taking on quests.
